Why is my website not showing up on Google? 9 causes and how to fix them
You search for your business name, or for the service you sell, and your website is not there. In two minutes you can find out why. Then it is a matter of applying the right fix.
Quick answerIt is almost always one of three reasons: Google does not know your website yet, a setting is telling it not to show the site, or the site does show up, but too far down for anyone to see it. The test below tells you which one is your case.
The two-minute test
Open Google and search for site:yourdomain.com, replacing it with your website’s address.
- Your pages showed up: Google knows your website. The problem is ranking, and causes 6 to 9 are yours.
- Nothing showed up: Google does not have your website in its index. Start with causes 1 to 5.
This is the test that Google’s own SEO guide recommends. To see the exact reason for a specific page, use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console, which is free.
The 9 causes, from the most common to the hardest
1. The website is new
Google takes time to find and process a website. According to its documentation, some changes show up in hours and others take months, and it is reasonable to wait a few weeks. How to fix it: add your website to Search Console and request indexing of the home page. Search Console Help recommends waiting at least a week after that before deciding there is a problem.
2. A forgotten noindex tag
Websites under construction often carry an instruction asking Google not to show the page. If it is not removed at launch, the website stays invisible. How to check: in URL Inspection, the message is "Excluded by ‘noindex’ tag".
3. Robots.txt is blocking it
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt. If there is a line that says Disallow: /, the whole website is closed to crawlers. How to fix it: ask whoever manages your website to open it up.
4. No other website links to yours
Google says that the vast majority of new pages it finds every day reach it through links. A website nobody mentions takes a long time to be discovered. How to fix it: add the address to your social media profiles and ask customers and partners for a link.
5. You have never opened Search Console
Submitting a sitemap is not mandatory, and Google says so. But without Search Console you cannot see the errors it found. How to fix it: add your website, submit the sitemap and check the pages report once a month. Also check the Manual Actions report: it is rare, but it is where Google tells you it has demoted or removed a page for breaking its rules. It matters twice as much if you bought a used domain.
6. The title does not say what you do or where
"Home" or "Welcome" helps nobody. The title is the blue text in the search result, and it is what people use to decide whether to click. How to fix it: use your service and your city, as in "Bookkeeping for small businesses in Denver".
7. The page has little content, or copied content
Three lines and a phone number do not answer any question. Text copied from another website does not either. How to fix it: explain what you do, who it is for, how it works and how long it takes, in your own words.
8. The website is slow or poor on mobile

How to check: test your address in PageSpeed Insights, from Google, and open the website on your own phone, using mobile data.
9. You show up, but on the second page
There is no quick fix here. You need a better page than your competitors for that search, and mentions from other websites. That is the work of SEO consulting.
Summary: symptom and fix
| What you see | Likely cause | First step |
|---|---|---|
The site: test shows nothing | New website, noindex or robots.txt | URL Inspection in Search Console |
| It only shows up when you search for the business name | Title and content do not talk about the service | Rewrite the page title and text |
| It shows up on the second page or later | Stronger competitors | A better page and links from other websites |
| It used to show up and vanished after a redesign | Old addresses with no redirect | Redirect each old address to the new one |

What makes no difference
Three old beliefs that Google’s guide debunks:
- A keyword in the domain name. According to Google, it has hardly any effect.
- The keywords meta tag. Google Search does not use it.
- A minimum word count. There is none. Text length alone does not count toward ranking.

Frequently asked questions
How long does Google take to show a new website?
There is no fixed time. Google says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take months, and that it is reasonable to wait a few weeks before evaluating. Adding the website to Search Console and getting your first links helps.
Do I need to pay Google for my website to show up?
No. Regular search results are not paid. Paying is something else: Google Ads, which are labeled as sponsored.
My website used to show up and vanished after I replaced it. What happened?
Most likely the old addresses stopped existing with no redirect. Each old address needs to point to the matching new page, otherwise Google treats the website as a different one.
